Exhibition catalogue, 2009
Hardcover, 111 pages, 106 color plates, 250×275
With essay by Kristine McKenna
Publisher's Description; The use of heterosexual pornography or soft erotica in collage and assemblage is often all too uncritical, but for a few of the California artists who came of age in the early 1950s, its applications were much more nuanced. For example, Wallace Berman's 1957 Cross' assemblage features a close-up photograph of heterosexual penetration that affirms sex as a 'factum fidei' ('true fact,' as Berman's inscription went)-its explicitness serving simply as realism. This approach to 'girlie magazine' imagery and its polar opposite-the impulse to decommodify sexuality-can both be found in the photographs, paintings and books of Richard Prince, an artist whose fondness for the era of Berman is well known. She traces these overlaps and sympathies with reproductions of previously unseen works by Berman and new images from Prince's Girlfriends and de Kooning series. Also including an interview with Prince, She is edited by Kristine McKenna, whose ongoing work on Wallace Berman and his contemporaries continues to yield exciting discoveries.
Hardcover, edition 3000 copies, 180x240
The second Dashwood McGinley collaboration of 2010, Life Adjustment Center, combines more b&w studio nudes, many with wild animals, and McGinley's 2010 summer road-trip. Every summer since 2005 McGinley and a handpicked team has hit the road in search of adventure, crisscrossing America often for months at a time. The images have evolved into McGinley’s signature style: Pyrotechnics, dreamlike compositions, motion and rich color – an evocative mixture of vintage pornography and Easy Rider.
Steidl February 2010
Stapled softcover, 56 pages, 31 colour plates, 175x230
In the summer of 2005 Steidl published a small booklet of Juergen Teller's work, titled 'The Master'. It offered a characteristic examination of his own world and persona as a photographer, a mixture of fashion and commissioned works, alongside self-portraits, family photographs and scenes from his Bavarian home. The title and starting point for the book were portraits of two of his heroes, the photographers William Eggleston and Nobuyoshi Araki. The book quickly went out of print and a second edition of the 'The Master' will now be printed alongside 'The Master II', marking the beginning of a series of booklets that will culminate in a slip-cased edition of all ten or more at some point in the future. 'The Master II' comprises his recent body of work 'Ukraine' in which he chose to employ the city of Kiev as the setting for a fashion shoot, mixing fashion, still-lives of the city, and portraits of ordinary people as a way of representing his own fantasy of a country marked by a brash youthful energy and an obsession with capitalism.
Flasher Factory 2004
Softcover, This 64 page book is bound in wraps, 202x255
This is the first regularly published book of McGinley’s work. While his earlier photography seemed to place him in the confessional tradition of Larry Clark and Nan Goldin, the pictures of naked youth in strange settings that began with this book broke new territory and revealed a unique voice. McGinley is the youngest artist ever to have a solo show at the Whitney, and is the recipient of the Young Photographer Infinity Award from ICP.
Purple Books December 2001
Hardcover, 96 pages, 160x220 with CD
In Kim's Bedroom, conceptualizer and guest curator Kim Gordon (SonicYouth) introduces the spectator to an extraordinary, personal world in which visual arts, photography, film/video, fashion and music have come together. The project includes an exhibition, a music performance, a film night and a publication with CD.
The artists Gordon invited are either active in more than one domain or at the crossovers of the disciplines mentioned before. The layout of the exhibition is a striking interplay of the distinctions between public and private, inside and outside, fantasy and reality. The MU space has been transformed into an interior referring to a film set. A curved wall leads the spectators via a succession of works by Jessica Wood, Jutta Koether, Kim Gordon, Rita Ackermann, Spike Jonze, Sophia Coppola, Richard Kern and Raymond Pettibon to the focal point of the exhibition. In this intimate space, the bedroom, one of the artworks is an installation by fashion designer Susan Cianciolo.
In this 'homely' environment, the audience is invited to see themselves - and obviously to be seen - in the Cianciolo designs. In the bedroom, the audience can make their own selection from video films by Tamra Davis, Sadie Benning, Cameron Jamie, Tony Oursler, Dave Markey, Lisa Rinzler, Kathleen Hanna and Kim Gordon.
With the presentation of Kim's Bedroom, MU has realized an exciting project in which recent developments in contemporary art are shown in juxtaposition. The majority of the participating artists have come up with new works for the exhibition.
During the opening of the exhibition, the publication designed by Purple in Paris will be presented. This publication contains works by most of the artists participating in Kim's Bedroom, and includes a CD. The music performance will start at 9pm on Saturday 18 March 2000 in Cultureel Centrum De Effenaar. Participating musicians are Quix-o-tic, Steve Malkmus, Jim O'Rourke, Ikue Mori, DJ Olive, Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore. On Sunday 19 March, from 8pm onwards, films and videos by Raymond Pettibon, Dave Markey, Cameron Jamie and a selection from the video recordings of the exhibition will be shown in the Rembrandt Cinema.
Holzwarth Publications 2002
Paperback, 256 pages, 214x321
This is a collaboration between Harmony Korine and the painter Christopher Wool that was published as a book by Holzwarth Publications in the US on July 2, 2002.
The result of a collaboration between the filmmaker Harmony Korine and the painter Christopher Wool, this series of experimental images tests the limits of the pictorial and the abstract, pushing the boundaries of visual and textual narrative to extremes. Korine's photographs form the basis of an intense process of layering, drawing, overprinting and photocopying as each image is passed back and forth between the artists until the images are reduced to ghostly shadows beneath a barrage of scumbled dot-screens, random patterning and symbolic blurs and drips. Gradually the fragmented, distorted images serially mutate, attacked by a combination of mechanical and human processes, yet despite the violence exerted upon it, a vestige of narrative always survives.
